Default The Fonz and Walleye_71 on the Chain {pics}

Met up with Walleye_71 bright and early this morning to try our luck on the Chain. I showed up at his house 30 minutes early just to show him I was serious...

To make a looong story short, we caught quite a few fish {50+} in a half day fishing.
Unfortunately 35 were tiny whitebass. We were able to keep 12 decent fish for the pan, but it took a lot of sorting.

The best 4 fish of the the day {BIG 12"+ crappies} were lost at the hole by none other than Walleye_71 who was horsing them to the surface using 1 lb test line {yes 1 lb test}...
To make up for his many mistakes today, Walleye_71 graciously offered to clean the fish so my wife would have nice, boneless filets.

My wife was very happy tonight and will be talking to Rich's girlfriend soon so he can clean more fish for my better half. Rich made a friend of her tonight

All of our fish were caught on spikes, waxies, plastics and minnows {in that order} in 11' to 22' of water. Hole hopping and a finesse approach were very important...

Mmmmmm! Crispy fried! I bet he'll say that the 12"ers bit his lure mainly because of the 1# mono.

You are correct!
Rich was preaching to me all day about the virtues of 1 lb test line.
I guess the 2 lb test I was using was waaay too thick...

Jim Ross, we were on Pistakee Lake

Riddle me this Fonzie. Does the lb test matter more to the fish because the density of the cold water and bait action, or the fisherman for ease of detecting the bite?

I will have to defer to my mentor Walleye_71 for the correct answer. Hopefully he will chime in.

I will say this. I don't think it's the thickness of the line per se.
I think the 1 lb test does not have the ability to make your jig have that nasty slow spin when you hold it still at your desired depth. Mono in a heavier pound test can make you jig spin/twist due to coiling coming off the spinning reel.

I also think a good ultra light rod {without a spring bobber} and learning how to read your fish finder will catch the lightest of biters.

But I'm no Walleye_71 that's for sure. He caught the most overall fish and 8 of the 12 fish we kept :-}

Keep Just wondering why I can be successful with 6lb in the summer and they drop down to 1 or 2lb during the winter.
