Default HUGE GILL 10-11-08

I don't think I've ever caught a larger 'Gill than this. Especially locally. Some down on Reelfoot lake may have come close but this is a monster for around here. The photos really don't do the fish justice. Belive me --- the fish looked larger in person.

Sorry about the photo quality, but this is the best we could manage.

It really DID measure out right at 11"

I know this shot does not show the fish, but it was the only way to see the weight.

This guy fought so valiantly, & lived such a charmed life I put him back for someone else to catch and enjoy. So somewhere in Pondo is one BIG'OL 'GILL!!

Its a red ear sun fish, its pretty common for them to be that big. Awesome catch though.

Thanks for the ID. I wasn't SURE it was a 'gill.
I caught him on a 1/2" piece of 'crawler & a #10 hook, 6' under a tiny float. 4# test & a 4 1/2' ultra light.
I'm not buying that redears are "common" in that size, at least in these parts. I target Sunnies of all types around here quite often & in 58 (almost 59) years, I've seen ZERO this big.

IL state record, Redear Sunfish 2 lbs 12.3 oz at Marion CC Lake caught by Mike Mattei on 9/7/1985

Your Redear is a great fish. It would be equivalent to someone catching a 6-7 lb. Largemouth which many of us probably have not caught.

Nice catch!

Nice redear. They run a little larger than a bluegill. I was out last Thursday on Pondo and landed a bluegill just under 11". By far, the largest I've caught up in this area. And, just like yours, it's back in the lake just waiting for the next fisherman.
