First time for me and my buddy and his kid visiting lake shelbyville. I just read the report from firehouse cook, glad I lucked out and chose to stay at gregorys resort ( right next to litha resort. great place, nice clean, electrical hook up for boat, reasonable, 3 minutes from ramp.)
Started out on tuesday at about 10:00 am in the coves right off the houseboats. Throwing 1/16 jig & tubes at the shoreline near submerged timber and brush. Lake was VERY high, as even the pavillion near the dam was half way under water
Tried the jigs for a while, a few hits, but nothing great. Then switched over to a drop shot rig set about 18 inches high with a red circle hook and minnow. Would throw near the shore, raise the rod tip, and slowly drag the weight back dragging the bottom. The slope went down from 1 foot of water to 10 feet at the boat ( about 10 feet depth). About 2 feet away from the boat is when we started to get the bites. The key was staying in contact with the bottom and keeping the line taught. We ran out of minnows at about 5 pm with about 20 crappie and 3 lm bass, all ranging in size from 9-11 inches.
The second day we started about 7:30 and went with the drop shot rig. we were on fish in the coves within the first 1/2 hour. We wanted to experiment with different parts of the lake as this was our first time there. we went to a spot that had submerged timber and brush, with 2 drop offs. One was 40 feet down to about 18 feet, while the other was 20 feet to about five. We managed a a few crappies from there, along with a walleye and some bass. My buddy hooked into a nice 4 lb walleye, but broke off at the boat ( only 4 lb test
we then tried another spot way back in a cove near country club cove. We hooked into a school of crappie and were pulling them out one after another. we ended up with about 26 crappie after we ran out of minnows again! ( note to self-buy MORE minnows next time!!) we tried gulp minnows, leeches, jig & tubes, but the fish wanted minnows, even if they were dead!!
We ended the day at near the dam throwing crankbaits at the rip rap. We tied into about 8 largemouth, a few white bass, and had a NICE musky follow up to the boat.
all in all, a great trip. we ate dinner at the longbranch grill, FANTASTIC!!!
The place we stayed at offers guide services also, very knowledgable and nice guy, chuck. he just caught the lake LM record a month back.
Great place, will be going back soon!!
