Default Lake Newton

Anyone on here ever fish down there? I'm heading down for the weekend to fish. Just looking for basic info, like what type of structure to expect, so i know what gear to bring. Any replies are welcomed and appreciated. Will post a report with some pics of the bigger fish next week.

Newton is awesome. If you are not familiar with the lake, be aware of the HP restrictions on the water. You can have a larger motor on the boat, but can only operate a motor up to 10 HP.

Lots of little fingers with lay downs and brush. Lots on main lake points with primary and secondary drop offs. I'm guessing most action right now is hot side (west side) in all of the little fingers. Heavy shad base. Spinner baits, chatter baits, cranks and soft plastics should be best bet right now

DNR website lists 25 HP maximum.

Right now is prime time for bigger fish. I would look for 63-68 degree water (hot arm) and start out pitching jigs along the bank. With those temps fish start pushing shallower, when you find better fish in the coves don't hesitate to keep working that area. It's not uncommon to see 10+ legal fish come out of the same general area this time of year. Water temps are key in my opinion. Running and gunning crankbaits, traps and spinnerbaits will catch fish but in our experience the fish tend to be smaller. In colder temps look for timber 15-20ft+ off of main lake points, jigs and carolina rig those areas. There is quite a bit of wood out deeper and finding the right trees will make a big difference. The lake gets very busy on the weekend but is still well worth the drive. Newton on a mediocre day will blow Braidwood away on its best day!! I want to see some pics of some pigs.

So Newton was a bust for us last weekend. Water was cold and chocolate milk. Low 50's. Threw a bunch of baits and worked different depths to no avail. Packed up and hit Clinton on the way home. Fishing there was not too good either but the water was much warmer by the discharge. Clinton had way more boat traffic. Up to Bradiwood this weekend for a fri/sat deal. Hope to do better.
