Default Lake Kinkaid Trip

Me and a few buddies are going to Kinkaid to bass fish Apr. 30 - May 3. Since Chad Cain has retired, I'm having trouble finding lake reports and information. I've fished the lake before, so I am most interested in current water conditions and active fishing patterns.

I thought I might try getting further from the spillway than I have in the past, so if anyone has fished the upper end of the lake, information about that part of the lake would be of special interest.

That said, any help or information will be appreciated! If I get some feedback, I'll post a report when we finish our trip.

We have fished Kincaid in the spring and fall not last or this year but for several years before that. We had a guide on Kincaid (1/2 day) for one of the trips. We stayed away from the spillway and worked the mid and upper ends of the lake. Depending on water temp we had success on largies with shaky head jig with dark plastics in as much as 12 to 14 fow. Cast towards shallower water and work towards deeper water with the shaky head. We also had success on 1/2 oz spinnerbaits - white, rattletraps and shad raps - various colors - during cooler water < 70 F periods casting along shorelines. We have also had success - perhaps more - on nearby Lake of Egypt. Some sources suggest Texas colors in the reds but we have utilized what we have for Northern Illinois.

Was there this weekend water temp was from 62 - 70. Water clarity ok south end near spillway . Gets worse north end of lake especially north of leven . Bass getting on beds in shallow coves, shad starting to spawn, both should be going on for a few weeks. Got lots of rain on Sunday so clarity won't improve for a few days. I was fly fishing for muskies with large flies caught a few bass in coves.

Good luck fishing there bass fishing can be great there. My son and I had 60 fish days there in past!

Default Kinkaid Trip

Thanks for the feedback; it's all helpful. Hope to get some more.

It sounds like a post spawn pattern may be more appropriate for the first of May, especially if the water is already getting to 70 degrees.

Looking at some of the information I have found, it looks like there may be better spawning areas (harder bottoms) mid way along the upper lake. Am I off base there?

I have fished this lake a couple different years in early April (do have previous report if you search the forum) and we decided to try later for more stable weather and warmer water. I hope it was the right decision...

Catch and Release (except for the occasional crappie or walleye fish fry)
