Default New to the area

I have recently move to the area from Colorado and am looking for some areas around Chicago to throw a fly line in (and maybe stay a night or two). Anyone have any good suggestions that is within reasonable driving distance from Chicago (2-3hrs) ?

I've used my fly rod on the Illinois, the Kankakee with some success for Bass. Did A little catch and release for smallies on the Aux Sable Creek near the Old Illinois waterway and had a ball. For Trout I', leaving for Branson, Mo in 2 weeks to fish Tanneycomo. Fantastic Trout fishing, but that's an 8 hour drive. Good luck to you.

I moved here from New Hampshire a couple years ago and have been pretty much disappointed finding good trout water. There are some rivers in Wisconsin that hold trout. The Black Earth is one I've had a bit of success on for 10 inch trout. I have heard discussion on this board about a couple streams in Indiana but haven't tried them myself.

The Fishin Fatman board advertises steelhead and salmon runs on the Root River in Wi.

I have set trout aside except for an annual trip to Missouri. The DNR stocks a couple of local lakes with trout a few times a summer but the cheese dunkers line up elbow to elbow and beat the water to a froth until they've killed every fish, (usually in a few days). The water won't support a trout fishery so it's just put n' take fishing.

It's a lot of fun to fish for bluegill, crappie, and bass with your flyrod and they're in virtually every body of water around, down to tiny local retention ponds. I have found luring a four pound bass to hit a topwater popper is as challenging as getting trout to take a royal coachman and a lot more accessible.

Get out there and have fun with your long rod, just be prepared for a lot of curiosity since most guys you meet have never seen one.

Hi jrodgers-

Coming from Colorado, I'm sure that you are interested in trout and probably not bass, pike, etc. There are a number of trout streams in SW and Southern Wisconsin within a 2-3 hour drive. BEC in Cross Plains has great trout action if you go to the right spots. Numerous large trout are caught there every year. Give me an email if your are interested in more areas or further info.
