Default Axehead

Stopped out for about 25 to 30 minutes today. The water was very clear where I was at. Although there was a lot of Algae around the edges. There was a good handful of bait fisherman sitting around watching bobbers. I didn't see anyone catching any fish. So I tied on a size 10 spider that I tied and walked down to the water. The second my spider hit the water,.... BAM!!!! Largemouth. Small so not really worth taking a picture. In the time I was there I managed 5 Largemouth (nothing bigger than 12") and 1 Bluegill. Then I had to run to work. I'm convinced I would have caught more, but while I was fishing a couple bait fisherman walked over and wanted to know what I was using, since they had been there a loong time and hadn't caught any fish. Anyway, It seems like a decent little lake. I figure there has to be bigger fish in there. I'll give it another whirl sometime soon

Axehead is right by me, and I've fished it quite a few times. Tons of bait fisherman there. The lake gets really weedy in the summer. All the luck I've had there has been with poppers, and spiders with my fly rod. The only fish I've caught there are dink bass, and small blue gill/sunfish.

I would still give it a shot. You could have better luck than I have had there. You never know!

I saw a guy catch a 15 inch large mouth earlier this week, he wasn't fly fishing but dnr came and checked licenses and he did not have one so they arrested him and what not and he tried to keep the fish but they luckily revived it and put it back in, they were making their beds, would they still bite off poppers and spider even when they are in spawning mode??

Default Axe Head Bass

Hit Axe Head for the first time today (7/14). 1 rod set up with 1/8 oz mepps spinners of a few varieties/
1 flyrod with an assortment of flies.
Fished from 7pm to 820pm.

Tossed an assortment of mepps for the first 20 minutes and had a few following but none attacking. Switched over to the fly rig and went 4/5 on Largemouth over the next hour walking the shore. A small green and yellow popper was hot first casting a 20 degree angle out from the shore (landing 10-15 feet off shore) and aggressively popping in. That cooled down after 3 largemouth under 12 inches.

Final bass was 14 inches and was too cool for 3 or four different flies. finely got him to attack a black wooly bugger with a weighted gold bead.

The bass were spawning, so I used crimped barbs and quick released.

Handful of guys tossing bait. Saw 2 other largies caught while I was there.
