Willow Slough topwater
Launched around 5:45 am saturday, we motored back to north tip of long island and started fishing. We worked both sides of pad fields slowly to just past birdhouse point. Used frogs and rats in black, white, green and purple, color did not seem to matter but sticking a couple of small glass rattles in the back of the bait helped. The majority of bites came in the thicker pads which did not help our catch rate, might have hooked 1 for every 5 that bit. Ended up w/ 6 all around 15", then decided to try some open water. Worked the more open water from birdhouse point to 50 yards south of mink island. Quite a bit of submerged growth which made spinnerbaits and crankbaits hard to fish. Our best bite came on rattling walking style topwaters with a fairly quick steady retrieve(basically no side to side action). Bites were explosive, caught another 20 or so ranging 14"-19"w/ the majority 16". It stayed cloudy til around 10am, once the sun started beating our bite pretty much stopped. Tried swim jigs, swimbaits and a few different worms on the way back to the launch, it wasn't happening. Pulled out around 11:30. Fished looked healthy and average size was better than expected! Also caught two bass that appeared to have been attacked by northern recently.
