Indy Gill Crushers
So; my girlfriend from the outskirts of Indianapolis invites me for the weekend. It just so happens her 55+ community has 3 small, manicured, retention ponds in it. Now my girl works from home so I wasn't about to interfere with her schedule. So that allowed me some play time. The pond behind her townhouse was full of 12" largemouth with big heads and anorexic bodies. I've been told this is a sign of stunting or starvation. This is surprising since I saw plenty of Bluegill for the largies to prey on. Used plastics (Senko, Culprit worm, Zoom lizard) the first day and after about a dozen of the stunted fish moved to another pond in the afternoon. Caught 2 better (1.5/1.75#) fish in the afternoon and noticed a couple of bites were right up on the rip-rap that lined the pond. Went back to pond #2 the next day with a Arachi Wake bait. It was Crush Time! Walking the wakebait right along the shoreline rocks on my 5th cast got crushed by a large I guestimated at 3.75#? Fished for a couple of hours more then a Bluegill Crusher about 4.75#? showed up. Not many bites, but the right bites.
