Default 6/4 I&M channahon / Hickory Creek New lenox

tried wading hickory creek in New Lenox first.
nice hot day, good for wading...refreshing!

Had not waded this before, and I must tell anyone who may be curious about it... stay away.

little vegetation, thick layer of sediment on all the rocks, big chunks of algae floating in the current.... somethin' ain't right about that creek!
no minnows, no snakes, no waterfowl, no signs of fish beds...
no thanks.

so drove SW for a few minutes and fished Channahon for an hour or so, 10-11am ish.
lots of folks out. we fished base of one of the little locks, and caught a few rock bass on bass minnows. Then a bass big enough to snap my 6lb test after about 10 seconds of struggle. didn't think i needed the drag set for something that big, at that hole. oopsie.
at least it was on long enough for us to see what kind of fish it was.

while i was tying on new hook, re-baiting, my ambitious friend who was using the same line as me, casted same spot, with same dramatic result.
great for the adrenaline, not good for much else.
after that, we had virtually no luck.
walked over to the dupage, to fish below the dam, just to watch two jerkoffs put what was at most a 9 inch bass (smallie i think) into their fish basket. they were running back and forth along a good stretch of the bank, making it impossible to fish that piece of river without being just as big of *ssholes as they were being.
if those two guys were anyone who posts here....shame on you.

got too hot to justify no action, so we called it a day.

Where exactly on the creek were you fishing? I have been fishing the creek for a couple years now, and have always seen plenty of wild life, and have had quite a few 75+ fish days.

There's a park in New lenox, near the metra station. I believe it's on Haines Ave?
went into the creek there.

also went in further downstream, west of town, off of gouger road.

a co-worker lives in New lenox, and while not a fisherman, told me that he had heard good things about the creek, so I was surprised by what I saw.

I was told of a dam near schoolhouse road that's supposed to be good fishing, but have no idea where this is. any suggestions/direction you could provide, would be great.

I would say that the best places are between Vine St. and Gougar. If you go near Gougar, you will need to wade up stream a little to reach the good area. However, right up stream is a deeper area that is great for carp. Good luck out there, and if you need any tips, I got plenty.

I know what you mean about people. It seems that almost every nice place there is gets ruined by garbage. I have seen people throw things off of bridges into the water as they drive by! I mean what is so difficult about throwing trash where it belongs!

Reminds me of a lyric by Harvey Danger

"Been around the world and found that only stupid people are breeding, the cretons cloning and feeding, and I don't even own a TV"

It is sad when you find trash everywhere when there is a garbage can placed strategically every couple of hundred feet or so in most places.
