PediB, If you are interested in the inflatables, there are manual inflate, auto inflate, and a combo vest (above) with both options. These may be susceptible to deploying in the rain and high humidity. Mustang offers these as well as HIT technology which they claim will not deploy in humidity or rain. You should try on these vests before you buy them. Some are more comfortable than others especially the way they sit on your neck. The $100 Cabelas vest, which is what I have on my boat, is much nicer than the $100 Mustang, which was my previous vest. I still carry standard vests as well. With a standard vest there is no chance of it not inflating.
Secondly, in the state of IL and WI, for an inflatable to count as a PFD it must be worn. If you get stopped and all you have is inflatables, and they are tucked away in storage, you will get a ticket.
