thomson, spring, and m landing....
Thanks to Roger for the directions, I took a trip this morning. Just to scout mind you. I have been hearing about the fishing on the mississippi backwaters and figured it was time to go look for myself.
Spring lake was shallow, with some decent patches of about 4 inch ice. Ventured out and tried what looked like some decent spots past the island. No luck. Spent about an hour. Ice good seemed like 3+ inches.
Then when to thomson causeway. What a nice state park. Great campsites, lots to do to keep the yung'en's busy. Saw 4 wild turkey struttin' there stuff on the road in. Went down about 5 campsites and chatted a bit with a father/son team. One small one, but that's it. Not much going on there. Ice was good 4+ inches.
Then ventured over to m landing. Lots of people fishing the channel, just north of the parking lot. No luck. Didn't see many fish, even small ones. Went south of the parking to about 6 groups fishing. Only some small bluegills, and a small crappie. Ice was good 4+ inches.
Then took a walk into mallard bay. Ice looked thin around the springs, so I did get to far out. A couple of guys fishing, but nothing to speak of.
Tough finding bait, so I am glad I brought some with me. There was one spot in Morrison, but looked closed when I drove through. One guy said there was a bait shop in Clinton, but didn't go to look.
Overall, it was a pleasant drive. Not too far with mileage of about 130 miles. Got there in about 2 hours or so. People were great. Lots of pleasant ice fishing folks. Lots of old timers. Learned alot about the backwaters today.
Will take trip back in a few weeks.
Drive it like you stole it!
Bass is for guys that cant catch walleyes.
