I hit 31st Saturday evening, and battled the wind for a while, until we called it quits. That was some nasty wind, and stinging sand flying around. Some people came and went after about 10 mins, and a big group of guys had their grills and fryers over by the bathroom building, and were cooking over there. Didn't get nothin, but we didn't stay out too long. Kind of disappointing for the annual event my buddies and I have had going for years now, and especially since I drove up for Champaign for it. Hey- does having a light by the net help any? I have a submersible fishing light and a car battery, and we had it hooked up and working great, but we were not out long enough to really measure it's usefulness...

Default light

two things:

31st street-get there early enough to see the new rocks that wer put in last year-they extend out way further than one would think!!!

lights in/over the water- DEFINATELY makes a huge difference! when i use a hanging lantern or a floating "crappie light" i generally out catch my 'neighbors' 2 to 1!!! -just my last two millenium's worth of time on the water...rofl!!!

Great to meet some new faces out at the Smelt derby - Lars, Fishin Chris, etc. I love the way you guys fish - I don't think I can go out anymore without coolers, grills, and a deep fryer.

Saw Smeltaholic out the next afternoon too out in the harbor, you really must be a smeltaholic. How'd you end up doing?

It was slow. 5 smelt and one small brown. I will be out again Saturday, If the weather isn't bad I will be on the jetty, if its bad I'll be in the harbor. maybe I will see you out there. Hopefully the water temp will rise a few degrees.

Default smelt fishing

I live near fox lake and was going to go smelting in waukegan. The waukegan pier is under construction. Johnson pier is the only place to go, but it closes at 9pm. Is anyone else going there soon? And are there any other places to go?

It's supposed to warm up and rain. Might do the trick.
