Default HELP! Can anyone help me break my dog out of this?

I have a 7 month old Golden Retriever and everytime he takes a drink of water he sticks at least 3 inches of his nose in the water. So when he's done drinking he slobers water all over the place. I have never seen a dog do this and can't find anything on the net about fixing it. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

luv2fish2 - we had a huskie that did that. I don't know of anyway to break them of it. We just kept a towel around and put his bowls on a plastic tray, similar to the ones they have for wet/muddy boots (they go next to a door normally)

River throws about a quart maybe less water around after drinking if someones around if not she is pretty neat. It might be a rush thing or just in a hurry to see you.

A towel on the floor is the only solution we've found. Our kitchen floor has never been cleaner.

You may want to have a Vet take a look. He may have a reason to have to drink like that and a Vet may have a suggestion.

Training collar usually used for barking problem might be used for this?

I have a 6 year black lab that did the very same thing. I watched closely to see why. What she was doing was trying to lap the water off the bottom of the bowl. Even though the bowl was three inches deep and filled to the top. Never did break her of this habit, but as she ages she is not as bad. But still a very sloppy drinker. Just love her, and learn to live with it.

Nothing wrong with the dog. Get a towel, and don't slip.

No need to go to a vet or anything like that. The dog is just sloppy.

Mine is too.

Get a large tub and only fill it an inch deep.

Here's what helped with our dog. We changed bowls. She used a plastic water bowl and we switched to a metal one. Didn't fix the problem completely, but it was much better. Joe

Many of my shorthairs have done that It drove me nuts until I was talking to a breeder and it was a simble fix

raise the Bowl, I made a platform that the bowl fit in and it was just high enough for them to drink and eat out of
