Default pike lures (ice)

what lures would be good for a shot at some northern pike? technique? i take it pike roam somewhat under ice. how about bigger bass? do they roam or do they stay in a certain area? no live bait area, so i'm thiking maybe frozen (dead) minnows ... besides a jigging rapala

In northern Michigan, one of the number one baits is frozen smelt. Don't know where you'd find them, but they are great if you can.

I agree.
It is a favorite bait for pike in Minnesota also.
Dead shiners work great after ice out also.
Pike are scavengers of sorts.
They will cruise around looking for sick and dying (or dead) baitfish, winter-kills if you wish.

Seen a kid fishing Busse a couple years back early spring using smelt he said he picked up at Jewels. Needless to say he pulled out about a mid 20's pike out while using smelt.

Smelt for sure! I never heard of ppl actually eating smelt until I moved here. Otherwise, jigging with kastmasters works well!

Some years back, I killed Pike left and right in Minocqua using Shiners about 12-18 inches off the bottom.

Just to let you know Ed Shirley's carry both large and small frozen smelt. At least our store in Morton Grove carriers them. If you are looking for a large amount call ahead and they can order them for you. Frank
