Default Indiana Perch bite, was hot today! (pics added)

Done Coho fishing after yesterday. More than enough Coho's in my frezzers along with my neighbors so I put that gear away last night. Went out again early this morning and headed farther SE and fished down there this morning and the water is alot cleaner and the Perch were really feeding heavy this morning. Seen a few boats out trolling this morning but no one was Perch fishing and it was like we were out there by ourselves which made for a awsome day. We left with a cooler full of nice 11-14" fish and finally the females moved in. Everyone must be waiting for the hand out reports to show up or fishing and searching up near IL/IN border community areas which are dead. Had a great day until the rain started to come down pretty hard on us. Once my camera dries I'll see if I can get some pics out, won't even turn on right now.....

Thanks for posting the reports PB. The weather just has not cooperated with my work schedule this year, but it won't be long.

I was out Friday morning with my dad, got a little bit of a late start messing around with licenses and his need for a time consuming breakfast, but we were north of Gary light by 10am and drove all over looking for fish between 40 and 60ft of water. We talked to 2 other boats in the area perching and both said it was slow with just a couple small fish. Were the fish really scattered or were you marking schools? I can see a 3/8oz jigging spoon under the boat on our depth finder but never marked a perch?? I've dropped a camera in the river before and my advice is not to even try to turn it on for a few days. Take out the batteries and put it on the dash of your truck in the sun until you are sure it's completely dry or you can fry it by turning it on wet. Even if the camera is dead the memory card should be good.

The fish were schooled up tight and we would just mark red pods of fish. Perch flies seemed to be the ticket though. I had another rod out with no flies, just the rigs I tie up and the flies were catching probably 3-1. Gary light has been pretty much dead sea at least for me, and others I talk with have the same results. I run through there and check some GPS coordinates for any marks on the graph and nothing, tried drifting through a few spots and just Gobies. Waste of time at the light. Like I said you need to find the cleaner water and east is where it's at. I gave some info to a friend of mine on Saturday and he came home with a 3 man limit of Perch, another guy I talk with decided to fish Coho's down there instead and boxed his limits as well. I'll probably be out there everyday this week if the weather cooperates. Thanks for the info on the camera, haven't messed with it the past few days.

Thanks for the info. I've been starting to think we put too much faith in the electronics and need to just fish more, we check our marks and if we don't see any fish on the graph we just keep moving. In the dirty water I drift with copper or orange flies on 1 rod and either fish a blade bait or cast another fly rig with gulp on the other so I can cover more water. I've had great success with the blade baits in both spring and fall when I am on the fish, heck they work in the winter too. I think I know a couple of places where out east whre the water clears up a little quicker and has good depth. Hopefully I'll be able to get out there this week. Was gonna try really early today but didn't think I could beat the 35mph w/o fishing in lightning Good news is I 've been honing my technique on cooking the coho, and I've converted half of the family and freinds to thinking that they're as good as or better than perch, but I'm ready for some white meat.

Ya Charlie wish we could have gotten into those tasty perch, but a 2 man limit of coho again was tough to turn down.

That one secret area you gave us was dead though when we tried it, all around that area from shallower to deeper with no luck.

Steve,
The 3 guys in the black Lund trolled the same area as you and bagged their limits of Cohos as well. Then they fished the same coordinates I gave you later in the afternoon and slayed the Perch. I'm going in the morning, if you wanna tag along give me a ring...
