Default Kankakee 7/30

Hey everyone,

Had one **** of a day on the river. Parked at prairie creek and waded downstream. Fish from this area of the river fight harder and than fish I have encountered. As always, the gar were in the deep hole upstream. Water is almost low enough to get to them. If the water drops another 8in you will be able to get to them. Only saw two downstream but they were in the upper 40's Forgot to push the button as im not used to shooting spinners and by the time I got my arrow knocked they were gone. Shot a dozen buffalo and 5 or 6 redhorse suckers. Two of the redhorse weighed in at 13lbs. You could have stuck golfballs in their mouths. Unfortunetly I lost them on the stringer as I was wading through one of the deep holes and was too tired to run after them. After another week of 90's you will have access to some truly massive gar.

different spots have different clarities but on average about 8-10in. Make sure to bring the polarized sunglasses. Buffalo were sitting below fast moving rapids and in the eddies. Redhorse were in front of the grass islands during the day but move out in the evening to the rest of the river. They are easy to spot because the stick their tails out of the water when feeding. Watch out when you wade because there are some hidden boulders and holes.

Sounds like one of the best shore bowfishing areas around

If you are traveling south on 55 take the wilmington exit. Turn left and then make a right at the second entrance to the conservation area. Follow the road to the right and park at the first parking spot. Go to the river at the creek mouth. Downstream is where you will find the buffalo and redhorse along with a few stray gar. Upstream is a deep hole where most of the gar hang out. Sometime gar will hang out in the creek but I havent seen many with this low water. Be extremely care when wading because there are many holes and hidden boulders.
