Probably don't get alot of reports about Lake Erie that don't include walleye, but here is one! I took the kids out last weekend for a 3 day trip bowfishing around Port Clinton. We camped with a group of other bowfishermen and women from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan at East Harbor State Park. First day was rainy and windy so we fished backwaters of both East and West Harbors, but still shot a decent amount of fish. Saturday the weather was much nicer and we ran the 5 miles out to Kelly's Island for some of their famous giant carp.
The weather laid down nice and we had a great day shoot, enjoying the amazing clarity that we do not get around here.
We shot a variety of fish both day and night including Common carp, leather carp (a mutation without scales), quillback, gar, sheepshead, white suckers and buffalo.
Our biggest buffalo of the trip.. 24#
After the Saturday afternoon shoot, we went back to the state park for a bowfishermans potluck and got to sample Red Fish and Gator Gar that was shot down in Louisiana. Absolutely amazing stuff! By 9 pm, we had made the run back to the Island for the night shoot. Tommy & Emily and I shot like crazy, but struggled with hitting fish in the 4 foot range. Most times here you can't see more than a foot, but there you could see 8 ft easily! We did manage to shoot a pretty good batch of fish though filling two barrels of fish.
Tommy with an average fish, close to 20#
Emily with the biggest leather carp (also called mirror carp) we've ever shot.
Our first barrel halfway through the night.
The only disappointment of the trip was that we did not manage to shoot one of the many Koi that have established a population in the area waters. Tommy shot about a 2 pounder and had it right to the boat, but it came off right as his sister tried to lift it in
The 5 mile run across open water at 4 am was a bit bumpy too in a flat bottomed boat, but well worth the hassle for the world class shooting.
