Default Fox River Conditions

The river is the clearest I have ever seen it!
I stoped on my way home and waded to chest deep (top of my waders, I', 5'-10") and I could see the grains of sand on the bottom.
Large schools of carp are cruising everywhere and you can see them 20 feet out away from shore.

Wonder why the large smallies aren't so active?
You can see the males on beds along the shoreline.
I have never see this on the river before and in spring around this time just assumed they were when the bigger ones were gone for a bit.
The water is just so clear in Algonquin, C'ville, Dundee, and Elgin areas you can walk a shoreline and see their beds.
They don't appear to be guarding them but rather getting ready to spawn.

If you have a chance check the river out, it is something I have never witnessed just due to the clarity of the water.

More algea growing on rocks than usual because of the sunlight hitting the bottom I would imagine.

Do you think it has something to do with the zebra mussels on the chain? I haven't seen the zebras in the river south of Algonquin dam, but the chain is loaded. On some of the lakes there is 8' visibility. Never had that before. Fish are extra spooky this year.

Since I don't fish the big lake very often I really don't know thast much about the zebras other than what I read on CLF.
If people on the chain are witnessing never before seen clarity then I would imagine that may have something to do with it.

The clearest I have seen the river in the past is about the middle of my thighs so the visibility now is almost twice that.
You seen the bottom in front of you but don't realize it's 1-2 feet deeper.

I was up by Otto end of last week and was still pretty cloudy. I will try and get out again tomorrow. Flouro leaders in clear water help hookups?

We haven't had all thet much rain in a while. What it really depends on is, how much rain did they get up north?

It stormed around us pretty good and the creeks were all high running into the river.
If zebras do have anything to do with it, it sort of makes sense since further south they are saying it isn't so clear.
More creeks running in may be clouding it the further south you go.
Dunno ...

Funny thing Ed, I had to run to S Elgin today and wound up following the river most of the way. Each time I got near it, I kept thinking how clear it looked to me. I finally got out and looked at the river down near Montgomery and it was amazingly clear down there too. Funny thing was, I was looking for carp, but didn't see any.

It will be interesting to see if, and how quickly the river clears up after all this rain
