HOBO PANS
Try This link instead... The double pie iron looks good!!!
Very cool! I think I'll get one of those for the trip.
By the way, I wasn't trying to post an image, just a link using the URL button.
Edit: They come in these sizes/shapes:
Available:
Double Square Pie Iron
Round Hobo Pie Iron
Square Hobo Pie Iron
Chuckwagon Waffle Iron
Hamburger Griller
Double-burger Griller

Any recommendation if I get just one for general purposes? I'm sure there is a lot of different thing you could make in those that I haven't thought of yet.

Aekhoff hit it on the head with the hobo pies. grilled cheese as simple as it gets. Google hobo pie recipies and look out!!!!!!!!!!!! Gourmet Hobo pies. I love Hobo Pizza Pies. Simple enough to figure oout. everything except italian sausage is good to go from the package (preecook the sausage at home if youre going that way. Can of pizza sauce, grated cheese, and any other veggie toppings, mushrooms, olives, etc etc. CDont forget the anchovies! Kids love anchovies right? Then dessert pies. The usual cherry, apricot, peach fillings. My favorite, Nutella spread with sliced bananas. TIP: dont over fill the pies (dessert or otherwise), Fillings get very hot and have a tendency to drip (McDonalds hot Cherry pies anyone) if there's too much. Keep them small and make more. Pie irons can be found everywhere. K-Mart, Walmart, Fleet farm, REI, Dicks sports.........
Have fun. Strong recommendation for Shabbona for camping, fishing and hiking.

Now i'm hungry

Karl

Cheap steaks or hamburger
onions
carrots
red potatoes
salt, pepper, cajun spice
butter

Chop all into pieces, quarter potatoes, 1/4 stick of butter each, and make foil packs with serving size portions.
Pour a sip of your favorite brew in the foil pack and season.
Drop foil packs into fire on hot coals, cook 30-45min.
Final product tastes like a good pot roast, complete with the carrots and potatoes.
My alltime favorite campfire meal.

1) I wouldn't rule out bluegills. One of our most memorable camping trips is when the kids learned how to catch the gills, clean the gills and cook the gills. They still talk about it. Beetle spins are great baits for kids to learn to cast and they catch plenty of panfish. Have fun.

2) Jiffy Pop popcorn is fun on the fire.

3) Tacos in a bag aka walking tacos.

Wait, what about combining 1 and 3? Fish tacos in a bag.

Thanks again for all the tips guys.
We picked up two cast-iron hobo pie makers (Rome brand) from Dick's.
Unfortunately, you can't remove the handles so I attempted to season them in the grill over the weekend.
Ended up with some serious black patches on them (too close to the flames maybe), I hope they're not ruined.

Just a heads up Taterman,

The 2011 Illinois Free Fishing Days are scheduled for June 10, 11, 12, and 13. It shall be legal for any person to fish in waters wholly or in part within the jurisdiction of the State, including the Illinois portion of Lake Michigan, without possessing a sport fishing license, inland trout stamp or salmon stamp.

For more information on fishing in Illinois, check out IDNR Fishing and I Fish Illinois websites.

* IDNR Fishing website - http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/fishing
* I Fish Illinois website - http://www.ifishillinois.org

Just in case anyone camping with you wants to wet a line without worry. You'd be in the clear.

Thank you sir.
Me and the wife each have licenses and the 2 kids aren't old enough for one yet.
I hope this doesn't mean the Rock Cut will be wall to wall but since it's a campground I wouldn't think so.
