I'm going there the first weekend in May. I sent a price request to a company that ties flies. I asked for prices on flies for wolf river rigs. The more I order the cheaper the price will be for each one. If you are interested, I'll can let you know the price once they get back to me.

Locals use piece of red or blue yarn you can't get cheaper than do it yourself.

guys I go up with every year, are getting together to make our own rigs in a couple of weeks.
We're headed up weekend of 5/17.

Blu: I've not seen the red / blue yarn used, but am interested, cuz.... yarn's cheap.

Do they just fray up a piece, and tie it to the hook, or.. what exactly?

Very easy to tie your own. Bucktail, thread, tinsel(optional) #4or6 aberdeen hook is all that is needed. Think red/white, purple/white, blue/white,
green/yellow.

Thats not yarn -dyed squirrel tail hair!!!!! you can get simulated at many bait shops Basspro or Hobby Lobby. Still very nice tie job.

its dyed bucktail. Readily available at any place that sells fly fishing equipment, BPS, cabelas etc.. Yarn works, as does cut-up strips of white t-shirt, and synthetic tying materials like polar hair, but, bucktail works best, IMO. More buoyant than the mentioned options, and, although it may be pricier, for 15$ worth of materials, you can tie a few hundred flies. Take the Brazilian wax approach when it comes to adding hair to your flies, "less is more!", sparse flies work and better than bushy ones.

Was, in this case, trying to get a sense of how the "locals" use the yarn, for simplicity's sake.

We're just making our own wolf river rigs. weights, swivels, hooks, etc etc etc. even bought some tiny spinning props for them.

Feel a little.. violated every year, when it comes time to pay for them at the tackle shops up there.

Sadly, there's zero chance that I'll be learning to tie flies in the next 6 weeks...
