Default Illinois FOID card applications changed

Last week I sent my application for renewal of my FOID. Yestrerday I got in the mail from ISP a new application form with a fee increase to $10. Only different info is all applicants must declare their state or country of birth, and they have eliminated the reason for application. I will have to wait till Monday to contact them re: what needs to be done to complete the process now as they have the $5 I sent with my application. Heads up to alll those who need to apply for their own FOID, all of the state links for downloading applications thru the ISP or the DNR still contain the form with the $5 fee. And NO way to get a question answered except for M-F 8:30-5 PM when most decent folk are working.

Default New FOID Applications

I admit I thought the worst but being the subject of guns in Illinois this usually requires swift and severe action. Called the ISP FOID Center today and after 17 mins on hold got to speak with an agent. The new form will be used for all applications processed starting June 1st. They are sending them out now to those who will reuire a renewal soon. The new forms will be an ancrease to a $10 fee, but will be for 10 years instead of the current $5 for 5 years. So it was a crossover in the mail. They are to process my 5 year renewal as it was sent. But again I had to call to find that out due to the new application ariving in the mail with my name/address as its mailing lable and no instructions.

SB 1094 extended the valid period of FOID cards from five to 10 years and increase the cost from $5 to $10.

Again, it's all about saving money, not peoples lives! If the folks in charge here in Illinois would think before they speak, they might suggest some great ideas!

Since the system has failed lately(the NIU case, and others), you might think they would make us re-apply more often, and at least make an attempt to make the current system of check work better?

Go figure?

Jim, making us reapply more often is an annoyance to everyone who is already in compliance with the laws. It is also a vast waste of resources for the State Police FOID center to do needless repetitive applications & card production where they should only have to verify the existing file thru NICS. One stupid part of the FOID is how there is no continuity of the card number. Unlike most any other ID, each time you get a FOID it has a new ID number. With over 1.5 million FOID holders renewing every 5 years how does that make any sense ? Any gun purchase from a gunshop or at a gunshow must receive an approval number from ISP FOID before the gun can be transferred, which basically is verifying the card is still valid. The state needs to be more diligent in it's record keeping and requiring mandatory institutional reporting to them of those who are disqualified.

SB 940 in now law. It becomes effective on June 1, 2008 and ensures mental health history is added to the national instant check system (NICS). and Illinois' FOID.
