Default New to hunting

I have been an outdoorsman and fisherman my whole life. I would like to take up hunting. I am thinking more along the lines of upland game, such as rabbits.

After the FOID card, where do I start? Hunter safety course? Do you bring your own rifle to these?

Where do you hunt? Are there many public hunting venues?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I only hunt waterfol but I'l try to help some. Foid yes, hunters safety required if you were born after Jan 1st 1980. Don't bring a firearm to the classes though. Where are you from? My sportsmens club is doing a course next month and in Nov. I think.

Default Hunting rules & regs

Go to any place that sells hunting licenses and pick up the Il DNR 2008/2009 hunting & trapping guidebook. Pretty much all firearm hunting in Illinois is done with shotgun except for seasons for deer using handguns & muzzle loading rifles. On state owned lands squirrels & varmints are by shotgun , on your own land almost anything is acceptable.

To find public hunting grounds go to IL DNR website , clikc on link to state parks & rec areas on left side, and for areas where hunting is allowed each areas page will have a link to it's hunter fact sheet. Not a fast process by any means but will pretty well show all available public lands. Good luck hunting for a place to hunt. Be aware that only 5% of Illiniois is public land and about 1/3 of that is open to hunting.

I am from the Joliet area. I looked at the IDNR site and it didn't seem like there were many public lands to hunt on. How are the lines and such when you go to hunt the open public lands?
