Mike,

I was sitting at SWSC this morning, didn't bother trying to draw at Mazonia. Didn't pick up my gun till 10:00 then dropped my first Widgeon, called them down from way up though (maybe I should have been using one of them expensive calls). Lots of shooting going on today though all over the place. Called Mazonia this afternoon, roughly 70 ducks at the hot tub, 27 ducks in the south unit.

I checked out some fields I have access to south of the speedway in Joliet. Beans were cut in our fields and a few adjoing fields, but no birds to be seen anywhere. We were going to hunt this am, but decided to just give it a week until they start cutting corn and hopefully pulling some birds into the area. Looks like we will be waiting a bit until we get some flight birds in.

Slow day for my buddy and I on the hot tub. Drew blind 20. Despite our expensive calls ($8 Haydel), we only managed a few birds. Lost 2 mallards in the grass, also lost a bluebill too. Arrrgh. Oh well I guess 10 ducks is not too bad considering the conditions out there today. Have to work on swatting those crips, but its opening weekend after all.

How'd the frugal hunters (Mike and Dave) do today?

Used a $20 Buck Gardner Double Nasty II to bring them down. I've got a whistle, but never really cared for them. Went back out this evening for a few hours to get the youngest out with me. Saw 1 duck 10 mins before the end of the day. Gonna skip tomorrow and go do some yard work for my buddy. Don't know about Tues, but for sure I'll be out at Mazonia on Wed.

I work at Gougar & W Haven in New Lenox & we are usually covered in geese around here by now but they are few & far between this year - not even seeing ducks & we usually have a couple dozen locals in the ponds here loafing during the day.
