Any new update on the ponds around here? The ones 10 acres and smaller?

Buddy who works in bonfield checked a small one today. He said it had about a inch of good ice and about a inch of frozen slush. We are shooting for Saturday morning. If ice fishing is a no go we are gonna go to legends sportsplex(old hidden cove). For the beer bacon and bourbon festival. Win win if we can ice fish in the morning and then go to the festival.

Definitely a couple inches by this weekend.. Nothing above freezing until Christmas week, if you believe the talking heads...

Hit a small channel off the fox yesterday for a bit. Skinny ice. A few gills and two nice crappie. Got there and saw that someone had driven there snowmobile down the center of the channel. Crazy if you ask me!

Should be good to go by saturday. Years back we used to ice fish at hidden cove a couple times a year, nonstop action til the cops came and ran us off. The last time out we were threatened with tickets and haven't been back. Maybe under the cover of darkness would be a better idea....

I hope to get out on some smaller strip pits over the weekend.

Ice fished central Kankakee county last night. It was intended to be a scouting trip with a couple test holes drilled. However if your bringing an auger, safety spikes, and an ice scoop. You might as well bring some poles. First hole revealed just over four inches of ice. Second hole the same. The one thing we didn't bring was a shanti. The gusting winds and darkness made for tough fishing. Hole skimmed over five minutes after drilling. Line iced badly as well, but I did ice fish. Unfortunately not one fish was caught during the maybe 20 minute foray.

Fished 4-6pm, ice 3"- 4". It was very cold out but quite nice in the heated shanty. Marked plenty of fish but the bite was slow and they were on the small side. Tried a couple in line reels, in less than 20ft they seem like they will be a nice addition.

How was the morning venture?? The weather at 7 am was nice but the wind and freezing rain later in the day made it rough. I'm still trying to warm up.

Default Made it out on Saturday

7 inches of solid ice in southern Kane County. Slow start with a couple dinks, but we found (or were found by) a very large school of medium gills in the 6-7" range. largest two were an *' and a 9" (latter caught by my 8 yr old). Took home a mess, released the rest. Also pulled in a 2 lb LM on the tip-up.
