Default Pistakee 1/27

Scattered and slow. Fish pop up and disappear. They would come in to check us out and then vanish. Drilled 30 holes and managed 2 crappie and a drum between my wife and I. We both had quite a few missed strikes. I didn't move around and explore as much as I'd like to. She doesn't hole hop well. She likes the vex lit up so she can just sit back and outfish me. Fish didn't want minnows, spikes or waxies. All fish were caught on plastics.

Bum day but I made it out on the ice twice out of 3 days off. I have another day tomorrow but staying closer to the city, maybe Montrose harbor.

A slow day fishing beats working any day! It sounds like you were in fish so hole hopping might not have helped your cause much. Good deal plastics worked for you, I can't say I've had any success experimenting with them. Good luck tomorrow.

If I could manage to get my wife on the ice, I'd pop up the extra large shelter I have, put in a cot, and if the fishing was slow...

That would make a good fishing trip. I can barely get her on the ice for more than a few hours, I don't know how much extra I'd get out of her. Maybe that's what I've been doing wrong all along. Lol. I ended up working today anyways so I never made it out. Hopefully I can get out soon.

We kept having the same thing, the vex would light up but no takers, then I dropped the camera and found out what was down there, large schools of drum. That might have been the same for you, just a thought.

Probably. I thought the same. I don't have a camera anymore. I'm trying to sneak in a fishing trip Saturday before I fly out of town. I feel like I need to redeem myself.

Anyone have any thoughts on targeting drum? Great fight and to me it's not all about bringing fish home. If you could figure out how to catch them consistently I bet it would be a blast. Plain worms on the bottom?

We tried exactly that and they didn't seem to work for us. What did work when we got bored and tried to catch them was putting multiple waxies on a jig giving them more of a meatier presentation.

The kids did want to catch a cat on a tip up so we used a half night crawler laying right on the bottom for the cats which worked quite well.

Does the shelter have a lock on the door?

It might get awkward otherwise if nosey other ice-dwellers were wondering where the mysterious sounds were coming from....

@ Coach- I always did best on drum catching them accidentally while fishing for bass. Maybe worth a try.

@Axis- I could always bring my Mastiff along and post the 175 LB beast outside the flap... that should deter nosy enviers.

I did forget to mention in the original post that I needed to set the tip up as well.
