Maui Jim Congrats on that first Northern. Alot of people don't like them and consider
them a pain when they take your bait while targeting something else. I think they are one of the most fun fish to have on the end of your line.
If I want an occaisonal fish fry it's bluegill, perch, or walleye. If I want action it's smallmouth bass or NORTHERN PIKE. (or Musky of course but
they're a different deal all together)

Ed what_stanger? if you want to get ahold of a big one consider joining us next spring at Angler's Kingdom.

We're going to get a group together and head up there.
With enough people we'll have the whole camp to ourselves :P

Here's some picutres of our trip this past spring

And here are pictures from other fish caught at the camp.

Pike Hunter Congrats! I remember my first pike.....he was 22" and ever since, thats all I target in the spring and fall. If your not against live bait as some are, then I would reccommend getting some medium or large roaches, and fish em on a red bait hook tied directly to the line and hook the little buggers right above the buthole and let em swim freely. After you fish this way for a little while you will be able to tell when the minnow gets spooked or is getting chased and you will be ready to yank when you get the strike. I can honestly say this has been the absolutely most effective way to fish for pike, and while a few have thrown the hook, i've never had one swallow the hoor or cut the line. Luck may play into it a little, but I'll take it. Fun stuff....can't wait until october.

Chuck
Northern

What-Stanger congratulations on your first pike. Next time you go to that place or any other place where there are Northerns use plugs and spoons, and spinner baits. You will have a better chance on getting them. And when you are lucky enough to catch one like Ed has on his Avatar, you will really know what the word Excitement is all about. Good Northern fishing

muskygun its funny the effect that first bigger fish has on you. same happened to me long ago . i still have fun catching bass and panfish, but always trying to catch something larger. the expensive part is yet to come when you realize you need bigger lures ,heavier rods and reels. then one day your fishing for pike on water that also has musky and you hook one. hang on cause then your hooked for life!

Ed Depending on who you talk to they are either called water wolves or slimers

Either way, I say they are loads of fun, congratulations

Bassinator Try the fish estimator in the members services. It comes in handy. A 30in. pike with a 12in. girth is estimated to weigh 4.8lbs.

what_stanger? it was the first sizeable fish ina boat, a small boat at that.
it was an experience.
i have never really had to fight a fish and have it try to run under the boat, etc.

it was cool, oddly enough though...after i released it, i was ready to go in and just bobber fish, so i could just reflect on it.
sounds ghey, i know.
but i felt that if i didnt' catch a single sportfish all weekend after that, it wouldn't matter.
