OBX Fisherman It was terrible, bad driving conditions on friday.

Goosepit Left the house at 3:45am yesterday to pick up my buddy for our hot-tub hunt. Turned the radio on before I left to hear about all the spin-out accidents and icy roads. By the time I got to his house less than a quarter mile away saw 3 cars off the road. I myself was all over the place and nearly took out a stop sign. Traffic reports claimed accidents were being called in every 30 seconds. I-80 was at a standstill. Numerous rollovers and ditched vehicles... Told my buddy to go back to sleep. Got home and fell in the driveway. Was body slammed to the ground. Luckily my arse and head broke the fall. Think I got a slight concussion... Woke the neighborhood up with a string of expletives.

Drakebuster So, I get out this afternoon (after shopping with the family), set out 3 dozen shells, would have put out some of my floaters but my barn door is froze shut. Lay there for 2 hours and see 4 crows, about 20 blackbirds, and 0 geese. When I realized the fog got so thick I couldn't see my truck, I called it quits. Want to get out tomorrow, but weatherbug is calling for 100% chance of showers, not sure if I want to get soaked while hoping for some incoming birds.

OBX Fisherman Geese were back up and around in the Plainfield area!

Tubes77 You guys get those "ghost birds" too? I can sit a field for hours and not see a bird in the sky, get up and run out to straighten a decoy or something and a group will mysteriously appear, coming straight for the spread then flare when they see me....

Run back to spread, settle in for 3 hours, repeat paragraph one...

Wow, thought it was only me

FishArt Yep Goosepit, either that or drive the truck out onto the field to p/u. My buddy has uncanny (luck?) with this. The last two times he's been out - where he hunts near Dekalb he hasn't seen much movement. Except of course when his partner drives the truck out onto the field! Last two times a large group got up while they were picking up - coming right at them. Of course the truck caused them to flare at about 75 yards on both occasions - lol!

LOL, that's a guaranteed way to get birds to decoy! Works everytime.

FishArt Lucky for you Drakebuster! The biggest problem we've had pulling birds in is when you have 50 or 60 THOUSAND geese feeding in the field next to yours. It's tough to pull down birds with that many birds in the adjacent field - even with a couple hundred full body deeks! You're mostly pulling in singles and pairs or getting semi-passing shots where they may come into range to take a peek en route to all their buddies. You eventually limit out, but the whole scene is SO COOL! I can't recall, but I think it was 3 seasons ago there were more birds in the air around us than I have ever seen - even on t.v.! I was just awe-struck by the whole experience. The noise is deafening!!! You don't drink much coffee because you don't want to sneak out and try to pee - lol!

Hey, thats where I'm at
New layout came UPS yesterday, with the 2ft drifts in my driveway, so I'm gonna test it out Fri. a.m.

Goosepit FishArt, you are correct about that pic. I saved it to remind myself about being careful out there.

On below freezing days, all that fog rising off the 50-70 water condenses on the blind material. That adds hundreds of pounds to the weight of the boat. Most guys already have their boats overloaded, so all that ice creates a deadly situation should a wave swamp the boat.

No bilge pump or bailing is going to save you. Gun the motor toward the closest shore and hope you make it.

Check out that outboard! I heard they were able to retrieve the boat and get it back in working order. Thank god they survived. Others were not so lucky.
