Cat Man in Chicago The river is tested for the edibility of the fish and there are no restrictions on what or how much you can eat with the exception of Carp and Catfish (1 per month) which are bottom feeders. And even with that being said the restrictions are for pregnant women and children as stated earlier and do not necessarily apply to men or non pregnant women.

Personally I used to be freaked out about it, but after my friend ate a fish out of there and didn't have any isuues, and after researching the testing and it's results I now have no problem eating anything out of the DPR. I am 99% CPR but will take a few for the pan also.

Here is the link to the 2008 IL water quality testing / recommendations.

conservation cops looked up on eating fish frpm dpr, said its safer for a pregnant woman to eat fish from the river, than to eat from lake michigan,,,good enough for me ,i have eaten fish from the river, cats crappie, and oh oh yes walleye too,and its all good,,,i do release most fish, about once a year ill eat a walleye meal,,its my rght,,but i do practice release, and size, and species

esoxhunter I fish a stretch of the dpr in des plains and mt prospect and I know of a few places where you can dig into the bank and find that your standing on the edge of an old dump, I've found layer upon layer of garbage from at least fifty years ago. Who knows what kind of heavy metals are still seeping into the river. It disgusts me to think that people are keeping and eating fish out of that river.

chitownflyfisher There is some serious sewage issues with the DRP that people do not like to acknowledge. The sediment on the bottum is seriousley contaminated, but the whole point is there are so many places where you can catch very edible and tasty fish close by that is befudles me why people keep fish from the DPR. I honestly think they just are not informed.

Sorry about that

Hey guys...

Sorry for the uproar. I did not know about any precautions or restrictions on the DPR. Remember, I'm new. As for fishing, I release 98% of what I catch and I only keep a few to eat once in a while. I love catching fish as the next guy, so I know where your coming from. I was just being inquisitive. So i'll practice catch and release, too bad the river is in that shape, yet it is encouraging seeing whats being caught.

In the Illinois fishing regulation booklet there is a section that will tell you which fish you should avoid out of certain bodies of water.

As far as why WE fish the DPR? I don't know about you Jeff but I fish it for sport only, like most smart fishermen.

It will give you lanthanide poisoning, and you will get cancer. But really, don't eat from the DPR, there's waste dumped in there, and also, the river sits next to a lot of old landfills. So if you like to eat the fish you catch, don't go to the DPR, or anywhere else I like to fish.

mattw Not everyone fishes for food. Its the hunt, the fight, the being outdoors that makes it worth it.
