Chuck [quote="wALLDADY"]The salt is brutal on your whole vehicle . They use a lot of it around here . Also dissimilar metals in contact with each other , in itself , causes corrosion . The Aluminum is the weaker metal .

Yeah that is what I was thinking also.

Walejig Had the same problem, broke off the stem removing the cap. The stems have a pressure indicator which cost $150.00 to replace. The problem is if you have 2 different metals the stem from the cap they will corrode,I Learned my lesson only use plastic caps.

Swede64 I feel your pain as I broke one off myself and had to take it to Toyota but I only got the high hard one for $250.

The new valve stems with the pressure sensor are the biggest scam to come down the pipe. It is mandated on all new cars and the shops are not allowed to disconnect the warning light which will stay on if you repalce the valve stems with the old style. You are forced to go to the dealer to get the computer recalibrated to turn the light off and the valve stems break all the time from a bit of pressure in the wrong direction or corroded valve stems as outlined.

The whole thing is BS because the a-holes in govt created a mandate saying we would reduce gas consumption with properly inflated tires that are constantly monitored. Studies have proven that habitually moderate underinflated tires only reduce MPG by about 1 mile. Thats a lot of miles driven to make up for the cost of a valve stem replacement.

A load of crap.

yes, it will PIT, not rust.

Either way, the threads would be shot.[/quote:6i564561]

It is the same thing when pitting goes into the grain it becomes exfoliation and that is straight aluminum cancer.
I should have known better being a certified Naval aviation corrosion tech and aircraft painter. I knew better and it kicked my butt.
