Re: abandoned watercraft

Unless it has some identifiable feature that a previous owner has documented it should be yours to keep. I do believe you need to register it with the state in any case, whether found, inherited, etc.

Re: abandoned watercraft

Just apply for a lost title. You will have to register it if you are going to use it in IL, not sure if you need a title for that or not. Nice find!

Re: abandoned watercraft

meh, looks like it's going to be mine regardless. Since it's never been registered, there isn't going to be info to use to find an owner outside of a basic description. With local PDs pre-empting IDNR on it under the law, if they punt... I just need a PFD and a paddle. It's not even worth the money and trouble to register. I could buy a brand new one for $199 and get legit paperwork to boot.

I'd ask for a release from the PD when you check in a couple days and it comes back clear... CYA... Best advice I can give you..........

Re: abandoned watercraft

I called the PD of both possible towns and explained the whole thing. It has no HIN or any other ID #s. They had no interest in taking possession. One told me to call back in a few days to check again if it matched any reports, the other said basically, 'congratulations'. Because the municipalities had jurisdiction, it confuses me a little.

Re: abandoned watercraft

Found boats have to go through the local police... They'll run the HIN through LEADS to see if it's lost or stolen... Then, most likely, they'll sell it at public auction or evidence sale... Unless you can hide it in your pocket, there is no such thing as finders keepers anymore...

abandoned watercraft

Today I found a perfectly usable kayak floating in a well-known waterway. It has no registration numbers or hull number. After chasing it for an hour and risking my life to get it, I now have a question. It is covered by IL's abandoned watercraft rules, correct? My understanding is, finders keepers, as it isn't registered (and the town where I found it has no lost/stolen boat reports). It has cobwebs inside and apparently hasn't been used in quite some time, so it's not like it has an owner bouncing along the bottom somewhere.

Anybody wanna weigh in? Is it really mine to keep no matter how I finish in the game?
