slimshady rnickel17;
My Personal Best Flathead was from the South Wilmington Firemen's Club. They have one strip pit (Incline 3) that is attached to the Mazon River by a cut. My 21 lber was with rod and reel, I saw a 36 lber accidently snagged by a bass fisherman with a crankbait in a tourney. 'Back in the day' the old timers used to haul big flats out of Incline 3 because they allowed set lines, bank poles, and trout lines since it was connected to the Mazon. There was a group of guys from South Willy who were 'hoggers' that often wrestled 20+ flatcat out of bank holes in the Mazon. The Mazon and the Vermillion are good (limited access?) flatcat rivers to try. My PB of all cat species is a 54 lb blue off my brother's dock at Lake of the Ozarks-what a beast!

another river to check out

My brother knows a good "catfish" guy who does his flathead fishing in the Illinois river. Just another place to check out someday when you get the chance.
We were at Lasalle lake yesterday (last day of the season there) and my brother caught an 18 pound 34.5 inch blue cat. I was barely able to fit her in the net....time for a bigger net!

I just love the power these big cats have....very fun species to fish for to mix things up.

slimshady rnickel17; I was out Thurs. morning wet wading for smallies by North Island in Wilmington. A crew from the U of I was doing a shock survey and I watched them shock up a 20 lb flathead.

Cotto I caught 2 flatheads last week in the State Park. I wasn't fishing for them but they hit crawlers drifted into a deeper hole near current. One was 10lbs, 1 was 8 lbs. I have caught them here before. I don't know much about them other than that I have caught several in this areas in the fall while fishing for smallies with live bait. I posted a pic of them in my post today. If I get any more, I will gladly PM you with details. I don't fish for cats specifically but what a fight!! I got them both on 6lb test.

Deepest holes on kankakee river

Does anyone know where some of the Deepest holes on the Kankakee river can be found. I know of a 14 foot hole and a 16 foot hole. I was recently told that flatheads are being found in 20 ft. holes right now, but I don't know where those can be found.

Much Appreciated! Thanks and have a great fall season!

Keep at it

I love your focus on this goal....just keep at it and it will pay off. Trotlines are so much fun on a river because you never know what you'll find on the other end! There's nothing like that anticipation before you check it the next day. Fall is a great time of year because fish are trying to load up on big meals as winter approaches.

Why the focus on flatheads on kankakee

The reason I'm pretty focused on flatheads on the kankakee river is 1. because i work on the river everyday and 2. Because of all the PROOF of them being on the river. A man caught a 46 3/4 lb. Flathead below the wilmington Dam this summer 2013. Photo and newspaper article can be found online. The dozens of flathead photos down at my local baitshop of people catching them this year. And non publicized photos of a group of young men in one night catching a 40+, 30+, 20+, 20+, 10+, on a few trotlines. These pictures were shared with me from a man I worked with. I know they are in there. It's just finding them.
