Dr_sean Greetings fellow anglers,

The original poster helped me out with this thread and so I thought I would return the favor. I fished this warm water discharge creek today that spills out of the Gurnee Wastewater Treatment Plant and into the Des Plaines River. The accessible portion of the stream (more like channel) is only about 200 yards long, maybe 50 feet wide, with depths (today) between 6 inches to maybe 6 feet. The water was very clear and was a balmy 60* F compared to the Des Plaines River just upstream of the discharge measuring at 45* and high and muddy. There is very little current.

I was fly rodding and was skunked by about a dozen large catfish who were bunkered up in the deepest section of the only real pool there is, underneath a fallen tree. I suspect they were simply holding there and not really feeding, and it was difficult to get down to them with fly gear. I did come across maybe a half dozen carp, all of whom were very spooky / none of them I really saw feeding. I saw hundreds of panfish and bass minnows but none of catchable size: all more like sub 2 inches. All in all this wasn't a great spot although I'm sure a skilled carp-stalker could do well here, and it was certainly nice to just see some large fish at this time of year.

One other thing I'd add is there is lots of fallen timber and it is quite brushy: aside from the mouth of the channel that dumps into DPR, fly casting is basically impossible here. I had a hunch that one might be able to pick up a pike right at the mouth of the stream, but I didn't try for long before losing a fly on an under water log, plus the water in the actual Des Plaines was very high, cold, and muddy, and wading without slipping into the goo was a challenge.

The wildlife scenery here was good: I actually got a nice view of a small buck (maybe 6 point) which was a pleasant bonus. Hope this report helps other anglers.
