4/25 Ill River Report...v river...Starved Rock.. Got fish

Great to be out, if only for a short time.

Temp Surface: 59 and windy, bright early, then overcast
Temp Water: 60.9
Water: High and fast.
Clarity: Weak, kinda muddy

Started out real early. Made it through ottawa on the way to backdoorin' starved rock launch. Just missed hitting a peacock (??) on the road near 23. It musta been 6 feet long.

Stopped in a Cajuns for bait. Told us the WHOLE story. That town is devastated. Don't really know unless you see it yourself. Cajuns is fine, selling mucho bait.

Crowds were thin, so not too many boats. First, checked the flats off the main channel near casterock. Marked a TON of fish. Was vertical jigging a pink blade. Got one nice one and thats it.

Went down further, marked even more fish, 18FOW, 12 feet down. Did the vertical and nothing. Hit the v. Few boats (no more than 6). And found few fish on the rocks. A lot of small ones off the back. Then decided to worked the down trees since the water level is up. We hit the mother load. Lots of fish, ended up keeping on 20 of the bigger whites. Let a bunch go, lost a bunch at the boat, missed a bunch. We ran out of minnows (had cajuns 4 dz special, so at least 6) arond 1130. Decided to call it a day. Fished seemed turned off with the cold front approaching, and spooked by yesterdays heavy rain.

Boat ride back was evil. White caps everywhere. Thanks god for the deep v. Lots of spraying. Wasn't too bad to get the boat on trailer, but tougher than normal.

Me and my biggest.

Don with a couple of fatties.

Fished the Vermillion on Sat. Got about 30 Whites and 2 16-1/2" saugers. About a dozen boats in the Vermillion. Some were really catching a lot of whites and then some boats did about the same as us. Fish were really active and agressive. Females still full of eggs.
