How can you get a custom Avatar?

I see a couple from Contibutors that are custom (ie. B-Man has the airpalne buster and Bob Hicks has a picture of himself with a nice smallie). I have a digital image of a smallie that I would like to use and want to see how to.

I hate to sound dense, but I'd also like to find out how to import a photo that can be used as an avatar. When I go to the add avatar section it seems as if I'm limited to the present choices. How does a person go about adding a photo? 5 5
