Continuing my time in NC, I decided to try my hand at some trout fishing out west on the Cherokee reservation on the Ocanoluftee river.

It is beautiful out that way!

But sadly, I simply cannot get it together with the flyrod. Tried a grub-type fly under a grasshopper as a float, but never even a nibble. Saw some people catching stuff with powerbait, so I switched to a light spin rod with powerbait, also to no avail.

Finally, went to a gas station and picked up some nightcrawlers and went to the island park in the middle of town at the very end of the day. Got into 5 nice fish within an hour (finally!). Just basically used a single round split shot with a small hook, with a piece of worm threaded on to completely cover the hook, and let it roll along the bottom of the river.

The island park was a study in how spots get fished out--I took home 5 fish and went back to see if I could get one or two more to put in my freezer. A guy who watched me catch my 5 fish was there with his SO, and an old timer. All of them were sporting a limit on stringers (tribal permit allows 10 per day of any size). I only got into 1 more and then nothing--all the fish were gone.

Did head to some spots where I struck out the previous day, and caught some chub and a nice sized sucker.

Took home 6 nice sized rainbows ultimately.

The last pic looks like fun fishing. Next time try some 1/16-1/8oz spoons in various colors. Swing them in the faster current.

Are those stocker trout or naturally born/reproducing?

Almost definitely stocker trout. Was told they regularly stock near the island in the Ocanoluftee park.

The ones people were catching upriver might have been wild, since it's stocked less frequently.

Re: That last pic being fun fishing, oh god it was a ton of fun. Beautiful sunny day, just put on my vibrams and waded the cool water all morning. Felt great!
