While I know it is always a good idea to fish, I was wondering if it would be worth while hitting the Duper today after all the weather lately. I am new to river fishing and really am not that famaliar with the patterns. Does it take time for the fish to get active after a rain like we had lately. I imagine the river would be fast and high today.

Cold fronts in spring are bite killers.
High water isn't bad and can be good for river fishing.
Steadily rising water is the best time to fish a river.
Flash flood type rising isn't though.

The smallies are just waking up and I'm tempted to run out today too.
Things that are making me think it may be good.

The water is high and the smallmouth not real active.
This means they will be hugging anything that is breaking the current.

It's warmer today

Things that are making me think it may not be good.
Warm temperatures don't warm the water up too much right now, the sun does.
Every time the sun comes out from behind a cloud I want to get out there.

It's windy and I may be uncomfortable :)16

BUT!
I think I can get out for an hour or so...
I'm going!

I had some things to do but was out for about 45 minutes on the Fox.
Glad I went :p

The wind was strong though!
Swells/white caps at least 2' high going upriver where I was.
The river level is higher than it's been so far when I've been out.
A lot of the wall I was walking in past reports is underwater by several inches.

Nice smallie. I had no luck on the Dupage. Stopped at a rentention pond on my way home and caught two LM about 12 inches each. It got pretty cold though

Wow Ed, that fish has some of the oddest markings I've ever seen on a Smallie. Btw, I'm FINALLY getting caught up and your replica should be done in a couple of weeks. I'll use your other pics as reference though!

Not really, in the pic of me holding it there's a tree right in front of me.
There's a big branch that is casting the shadow on the fish.
I would imagine that's what you're seeing as an odd marking.

Ahhh, that explains things. Some of those lower blotchy dark bar-markings amongst very faint (if any?) markings looked awfully different to me. I'll bet the hi-res photos tell the true story. Nice and chunky for a river Smallie...
