·Does anyone know when the gar start showing up at the wilmington damn? I believe it was around mid may last year but am not sure if it has anything to do with last years wickedly crazy weather patterns!

We haven't seen much gar-ish weather yet, that's for sure! Last year at this time, we'd been out a half dozen times and bagged a few. This year, one trip to the Mazon has netted drum and cats only. We'll take 'em, but that wasn't why we were there. The river just hasn't been at the right level yet. The water quality has been good, though.

Try the mouth of Prairie Creek in the
Des Plaines Conservation Area. I saw some

Couple weeks ago I was fishing Prairie Creek in the conservation area. Both K3 and it were on the high side. At its confluence with K3 I was fishing the mud line. There was a lot of baitfish activity about a foot into the muddier water. Minnows breaking water like misfired scud missiles. I was hoping smallies were the reason for the barrage of baitfish. Soon after, I noticed the reason for the scuds – gar. They were even breaking water. One was about 20+ inches.

This time of year and fall Praire Creek supports a decent smallie population. That is normally where I fish if other spots don't produce. I don't think I've ever gone there and not caught something. Next time try fishing closer to that little spillway, there is a decent sized hole about 20-30 feet downstream. Make sure you bring your cell phone because poachers are always there and they really load up. Call 877-236-7529 and tell them to send someone out quick. Last year I called because there was a guy that kept everything he caught. Total number of smallies was 32 and 17 largemouth anywhere from 4"-17". What a [email protected]%&! But it never seems to do any good cause everytime I go there, some ******* is keeping smallies. Don't be afraid to call a CPO because these rat fish-poos must be stopped.

Garman,take I-55 SOUTH to the wilmington (river road) exit.Go east (left)on river
road, about a mile down on right hand side
is access road.Take this road and you will shortly go over bridge over prairie creek
Immediatly after bridge turn right to creek.

Garman, if you haven't already been there
the left corner of the Kankakee Dam as you
face the dam holds some truly large gar.
You can watch them sun themselves from the
parking lot above.
Please use caution in wading that corner
as the currents will pull you in toward the
dam.
