Braidwood and the other cooling lakes are reportedly on the downsizing list (restricting hours, days, season length)and Mazonia is on the closing list released by Governor Ryan on the newest list of things to do to make Illinois financially stable. Be concerned! This is a big game of chicken over the budget and many things are going to get cut and scaling back and closing State Fish and Wildlife Refuges is right up there with closing prisons and mental health centers, letting prisoners loose early before their sentences are up, some 8,000 State employees getting laid off and/or losing their jobs, etc. In this election year noone will advocate for new taxes. Here comes the budget ax! The only effective thing you can do about it is to call, write, or better yet visit the local office of your local State Representative or Senator and let them know how important recreational and outdoor opportunities and activities are for children, youth, and sportsmen and women in this State. Not to mention all of the revenues in all of these central and downstate Illinois towns from us sporting anglers and hunters. It is serious folks.

I've been saying it for a long time now.....somebody had to get the ax if money is going to be spent on land acquisition and construction of an airport near Peotone.
FYI....they have spent almost $5 million so far in the landbanking and are going full bore to squeeze every last acre out of the footprint. It all adds up in my mind. Rob from Peter to pay Paul and screw the environment in the process. Eventually the airport will get built, the Kankakee River will suffer as a result and Mazonia will be a memory. Any ideas on what's next to get shelved? I have a few ideas of my own.

MazionaMan, I want to help fight to keep it open for everyone and how and who do I write to on this? I have no idea if there is one in my town or who it is. It would be a lot easier to write to them on the same note we all are sending.

I really think that "the list" and various other lists floated out there of things to cut were scare tactics. The budget cuts will undoubtedly come from the traditional areas, in other words programs that serve people who are disabled, children who cannot defend themselves, the homeless, and other people without money to give to political campaigns. I personally think its time to replace all of our legistlators with real citizens who know what it is like to live in the real world and have to balance a household budget or run a small business.

Each day seems to bring a deeper feeling of disgust for our elected morons. Big city politicians(or any politician for that matter)couldn't care less about fishermen. These people are driven by money and power. They have no interest in the simple pleasures of life(like fishing!!!).I have many wonderful memories of Mazonia and I sincerely hope this is just a scare tactic.
