I spent the last Friday trying to land my first trout out of Mt. Vernon Creek. I had absolutley no luck. It was a very hard creek for a beginner in trout fishing. Anyone have any advice on a creek that might suit new trout fisherman?

Not a creek but the Steelhead are in on the Root River in Wisc. It's about 30 minutes over the IL/Wisc border.

Mt Vernon is a nice stream, but it's can be tough to fish no matter your experience.

What you need to do is get a copy of the Wisconsin DNR Trout maps (go to http:www.wisflyfishing.com - there is a link there), get a DeLorme Wisconsin Atlas, and start poking around. There are many good streams within 45-60 minutes of Mt Vernon, some easier to fish than others. Black Earth Creek is easier to fish in spots than Mt Vernon, but the fish kill last year has really had an impact. I'm giving that one a rest for a while.

Good luck,

Jim F.
