My co-worker and his son have a good time geo-caching together. I figure I could do it as well with my two young boys who would both enjoy that type of activity. Apparantly www.geocaching.com is THE site for enthusiasts.

Does anybody in CLF land participate in geo-caching? What type of hand held GPS unit would you recommend? {Be aware that I know next to nothing about GPS units :-? }.

I go with my kids. We've done a lot of local caches and have started bringing the GPS with us on vacations. The last one we did was in Galena. We also pull the info from that web site.

I picked up a used Garmin eTrex GPS unit for about $60 a while back. It's a nice unit for this - very simple to use - it shows an arrow pointing in the direction you should go and tracks your speed, distance and time until you reach the point. My 8 y/o usually holds it and directs us where to go. Depending on the signel strength, the until will get you within a couple of feet from your point.

I've heard good things about the e-trex. Not too expensive and will probably serve my purposes well.

My wife is a 6th grade teacher and she taught a section during
intersession on GEO Caching. Of course she had to use my GPS
and made me go on a few test runs with her.

It was actually kind of neat. Seems to me like it would be a great
way to get these lazy kids these days off of the couch and out doing
something physical.

Some of the clues were pretty complex (with a bunch of math, riddles, etc) but then others just gave the GPS coordinance and a couple of
basic clues.

Good deal for the family guy for sure.
