I'm sure you guys have some experience in this.
I recently purchased a boat off eBay in Iowa.
I live in Illinois all year round
Can I register my boat in Wi?

The way I understand it is ; you have to have a year around residence, and pay Wisc. tax's on it as a residence. A friend of mine live's here in Ill. but claims his wife lives in Wisc. and titles the boat in her name. He has a place in the north woods.

I don't see why not. I bought a couple of boats
& titled them & regestered them in Ohio.
Regester them where you use them the most.

If you live in Illinois and title a boat in Wisconsin your going to get a fine ! You must be a resident of Wis. to title the boat there. The DNR will check your drivers license/fishing lic. against the boat registration and they will bust ya everytime ! Been there, done that, and we even had a summer home in Wisconsin.

Ohio along with Michigan are different animals sorta speak, much more LAX in their registration.

Wisconsin, UGH!

All in all I hope you obtained 2 bills of sale for your purchase? In case ya lost one. ;)

Remember Illinois is gonna hit you on $$ PURCHASE TAX $$

Nikster, that is exactly why I got two bills of sale for my car trailer that I bought in Tennessee. I lost the original. How else would I have been able to pay the exorbitant purchase tax on my new $500, 18' dual axle, electric braked, all steel decked trailer. 8:) ;)

This is not true about Michigan...We had a cottage there for 22 years and couldn't get the boat registered there as we weren't residents of the State...Didn't matter how long we were there!!!...Now of course things may have changed, we sold the cottage over 10 years ago...But I highly doubt it!!....Better listen to what Bigsaw said because he's right...DNR will match the boat numbers to your DL #....the only way you can beat this Crook County or the State's high taxes is to put the boat into someone elses name and use their addresse....And I sure hope you know that person good.....Yeah the taxes suck, But it's just not worth it...DNR plays for keeps now a day's....I talked to a DNR officer over the summer and he told me their so under budget, they have no chose but to get the ticket book out...on anything and everything...Geez...who would of thought!!!

That's what happened to me, good thing I had a duplicate bill of sale. Had to put in my own $$ PRICE $$, GEE how much was it? Then, my pen ran out of ink & I coul'nt fill in the last couple of zero's. :p Sheet happens.

ALL IN ALL Derailerman said it best :)2 , stick with registration in Illinois, might save you a headache down the road. Peace of mind will be worth it for a few $$.

Boat on private lake

As long as were on registering boats, I have a question. If you put a small 14 ft boat with a trolling motor only, on a private lake, would I have to register it in Illinois? This would be used only on that private lake.

I have 2 boats that are registered in WI and I live in IL (12' & 14'). One of the boats stays in WI year round and the other I bring down every once in awhile from our place up there. The only stipulation that I can recall is that the boat is not supposed to stay in IL for more than 30 days (but how would they know ;) ). I bought the boats in WI and the titles show my address in IL. I know I paid some taxes on them initially, but that was it. Have to renew my 14' one this year. Why would the state care as long as they are getting $ where you live? Gestapo hasn't shown up on my doorstep yet and I'm still legal so I'm not loosing to much sleep over it.

I don't think you have to register it if it is only used on private property. The boat I bought years ago(12') was never registered and it was on a privater pond.
Can someone verify this?
