Sorry for the bonehead question. I never ventured out on the thin ice. Mostly waited until later in the season and followed footprints out to the spots.

Where would I get a spud bar? How long does it have to be? How heavy does it have to be?

How would I use it? Sorta poke the ice in front of me? Does the weight of the spud bar, as it breaks the ice, tell me how this it is?

Thanks and merry christmas

Most places should sell spud bars. I got mine at Shirley's. I can't remember how many 'flavors' of spud bars there are. Make sure to put a rope through the "T" handle, or at least around it if it is solid and put the rope around your hand. That way if the bar goes through you don't lose it. I bang it once hard on the ice and if it doesn't go through I feel safe. You could always bang it twice to make double sure the ice is safe.

Good spudding, and have some spikes of life with you also!
